What is lens replacement surgery?
Lens replacement surgery, also known as refractive Lens exchange, is when the natural eye lens is replaced with an artificial one. The artificial lens, commonly known as an intraocular lens, offers a permanent solution to cataracts, short-sightedness, long-sightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia.
Lens replacement surgery is a safe and highly effective procedure that can improve your vision significantly. The procedure itself is very similar to surgery undertaken for cataracts.

Successful lens replacement surgery demands exquisite attention to detail.

- Small incisions are made into the eye. The outer lens capsule is opened and the natural lens is removed.
- A foldable, artificial lens is inserted.
- The wounds are sealed and an antibiotic is placed in the eye.
Your new artificial lens will safeguard against any future cataract development. After just one operation, you can have your vision restored and peace of mind knowing that cataracts will not come back. The majority of patients post-surgery will not need glasses, and they’ll see a sudden change for the better in their vision. If your eyes need time to adjust to new lenses, our eye specialists will help you choose a pair of temporary glasses that are right for you.
Generally patients over the age of 50 who require glasses could benefit from lens replacement surgery. The procedure can correct high amounts of short or long-sightedness, astigmatism or reading loss with age, i.e., presbyopia.
In specific instances, patients under 50 could benefit depending on their specific circumstances. For patients aged between 20 and 50 laser vision correction or ICL implants are often more appropriate.
Refractive lens exchange aftercare involves a comprehensive system of drops and advice from our team. You will be given antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops to use at home. You will also receive clear eye shields to wear at night for the first two weeks after surgery.
Whilst refractive lens exchange is a routine, low-risk procedure carried out in a single day, it is important to remember that you have undergone surgery and you need to take things easy for a few days afterwards.
After surgery, we will have significantly reduced your dependency on glasses. Laser vision correction to fine tune the outcome is included, however less than 2% of our patients need this. The risk of operative complications is less than 0.5%.
Our unique fee approach means that regardless of lens type (trifocal, toric or extended depth) you pay £4000 per eye for the package. We only use tried and trusted lenses from the very best manufacturers including Zeiss, Johnson and Johnson, and Rayner.
How soon can I expect to have good vision?
Every patient is different. It can range from 24 hours to a couple of days. It is all dependent on your healing.
How soon can I drive after surgery?
You must be able to read a number plate at 25 metres and meet the minimum visual requirements for driving under the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). You will be advised of this at your post operative appointment.
When can I return to playing sports ?
We would advise waiting 2 weeks before playing any sport, and we would also advise wearing protective glasses whilst playing any contact sports.
Can I wear makeup ?
We would advise you not to wear eye makeup for 2 weeks after treatment. All other makeup can be worn 2 days after treatment.
Do I need to take any time off work?
Yes, a couple of days. You can return back to work as soon as you feel comfortable but you will still need to take your eye drops as instructed.
When can I go swimming ?
We advise 4 weeks after treatment.
When can I fly ?
There are no restrictions to flying but please speak to your consultant if you are planning on doing so.
Can I do normal day to day activities such as housework & gardening?
You can resume these activities the following day. Keep away from dust or smoke and please ensure your hands are clean before administering any eye drops.
