Cataract surgery overview

What is a cataract?

A cataract is a clouding of the natural crystalline lens in your eye. As you may expect, this causes vision to become blurred and unclear. Typically, cataracts develop in later life and only become more severe over time. Cataracts can increase in severity, blurring vision to extreme levels, and in some cases causing blindness.

As cataracts tend to develop as a result of ageing, they are relatively common. The sensation that lights are too bright, poor vision in low light, or colors appearing faded could all be symptoms of a cataract. Unlike some other eye conditions, cataracts are not usually painful, so identifying the symptoms is important to diagnose and treat them early.

What is cataract surgery?

Cataract surgery is the only way to fully restore the vision of someone with cataracts. The operation involves the removal of the opacified lens, followed by the insertion of an artificial replacement lens.

Cataract surgery is a highly technical procedure as it involves small incisions inside your eye. Our expert eye specialists are equipped with the attention to detail necessary to perform this surgery and restore your sight and quality of life.

Many patients will not require glasses after the surgery and will notice an immediate improvement in their eyesight. However, those patients whose eyes need time to adjust to their new lenses will be guided by our eye specialists in choosing a pair of glasses that are right for them.

We can diagnose cataracts by conducting a comprehensive eye exam. The timing of cataract surgery is very much an individual decision. Some patients elect to have surgery when their vision starts to affect their lifestyle. The risks are unchanged whether one waits for cataracts to develop or has surgery at an earlier stage. A sizeable number of patients have lens replacements without the development of cataracts to benefit from a marked reduction in their dependence on glasses.

Cataract Surgery is an incredibly safe and reliable procedure. Overall our surgical complication rates are less than 0.5%. Your individual risks will be discussed fully at your consultation.

Adverse effects from this treatment are extremely rare as cataracts are treated with the utmost urgency.

You will be given both, the surgeon’s and the clinic’s telephone numbers to ensure direct support is there if you need it.

It will take a few days for your vision to fully return to normal. You will also likely experience some blurred or double vision after your treatment, this usually clears after 5 or 6 days but it can sometimes take a few weeks to fully recover.

Currently, there is no other medical treatment to reverse or prevent the development of cataracts. Once they form, the only way to see clearly again is to remove and replace them with an artificial lens implant.

After cataract surgery, we will have significantly reduced your dependency on glasses. Virtually all our patients have improved sight.

For patients who have opted for Premium Cataract Surgery, laser vision correction to fine-tune the outcome is included however less than 2% of our patients need this.

When will my eyesight improve?

Healing times vary depending on the individual. It could take anywhere from 24 hours to a few days.

How soon can I drive ?

You must be able to read a licence plate clearly from 25 metres away before you can drive. Your optometrist will tell you when it is safe for you to do so.

When can I return to playing sports ?

For your safety, we recommend waiting two weeks before playing any sport and wearing protective glasses while playing contact sports.

Can I wear makeup?

We strongly urge you to avoid wearing any eye makeup for two weeks following your treatment. However, all other types of makeup can be worn just two days after the procedure is complete.

Do I need to take any time off work?

You can go back to work a few days after the surgery, but you will need to continue using eye drops as prescribed.

When can I go swimming?

We advise 4 weeks after treatment.

When can I fly?

There are no restrictions to flying, but we recommend that you speak with your consultant beforehand if you have any questions or concerns.

Can I do normal day to day activities such as housework & gardening?

You can pick these activities back up the next day. Try to avoid dusty or smoky environments and please make sure your hands are clean before using any eye drops.

How long does recovery take?

Most patients will see an improvement to their vision after around 3/4 days, but can take up to 10 weeks. Side effects can persist for around 2 weeks.
