Understanding LASEK
LASEK, or Laser Epithelial Keratomileusis, is a type of laser eye surgery that focuses on reshaping the cornea to correct refractive errors. Unlike LASIK, LASEK does not involve creating a corneal flap. Instead, we gently loosen the outer layer of the cornea, called the epithelium, before using the laser to reshape the cornea. After the procedure, we place the epithelium back into position.

LASEK is best if you have thinner corneas or if you are not suitable for LASIK. The absence of a corneal flap means that there’s a lower risk of complications related to flap creation, making it a safer option for certain individuals.
Understanding LASIK
LASIK, or Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis, is perhaps the more well-known of the two procedures. During LASIK, we create a thin flap on the cornea with a laser. This flap is then lifted, and the underlying corneal tissue is reshaped using another laser. Once the reshaping is complete, we carefully reposition the flap.
