I had implants with Dr Musa ten years ago. It was the best thing I've ever done. They are brilliant. My sight both near and distant was very poor but since the op I've had no glasses no lenses and my sight has been super. It remains really good to this day. Thank you Dr Musa. Brilliant consultations and treatment for glaucoma since.

I can highly recommend the Eye Doctor Clinic, and I am so pleased I went there. Dr Musa, Gemma and Jess are lovely. They are very knowledgeable and were able to answer all my questions. My vision following surgery is great, and not having to wear glasses is fantastic.

What Is Dry Eye Syndrome?

Dry Eye Syndrome occurs when your eyes do not produce enough tears or when the tears evaporate too quickly. This leads to poor lubrication of the eye surface, causing discomfort, irritation, and fluctuating vision.

Tears play a key role in keeping your eyes smooth, comfortable, and clear. When this balance is disrupted, even simple daily tasks like reading, driving, or screen use can become uncomfortable.

Dry eye is one of the most common eye conditions seen in specialist clinics. It occurs when the tear film, the thin layer of fluid that covers the surface of the eye, is unstable, insufficient, or of poor quality. This instability leads to inflammation, surface damage, and the uncomfortable symptoms that characterise the condition.

There are two main types: aqueous-deficient dry eye, where the lacrimal glands do not produce enough fluid, and evaporative dry eye, where tears evaporate too quickly due to problems with the oil layer of the tear film. Many patients have a combination of both.

1 in 3people over 65 experience dry eye symptoms
50%of contact lens wearers report dry eye discomfort
80%of dry eye cases have an evaporative component

Common Symptoms of Dry Eye Syndrome

Dry eye symptoms can vary throughout the day and often worsen with screen use, air conditioning, or prolonged focus. Here is what to look out for.

Burning or gritty sensation in the eyes
Redness and irritation
Watery eyes — excess tearing despite underlying dryness
Light sensitivity
Blurred or fluctuating vision
Difficulty focusing, especially on screens
Feeling like something is in the eye
Symptoms worsening in dry, windy, or air-conditioned environments

What Causes Dry Eye Syndrome?

Dry eye is usually caused by reduced tear production, poor tear quality, or a combination of both. Several contributing factors are commonly involved.

Reduced tear production

The lacrimal glands do not produce enough aqueous fluid to maintain proper moisture

Meibomian gland dysfunction

Oil glands in the eyelids become blocked, causing tears to evaporate too quickly

Prolonged screen use

Reduced blinking rate during screen use disrupts the tear film

Environment

Air conditioning, dry air, wind, and pollution accelerate tear evaporation

Age-related changes

Tear production naturally decreases with age

Hormonal changes

Particularly common in women during menopause or pregnancy

Medications

Antihistamines, antidepressants, and certain blood pressure medications can reduce tear production

Contact lens wear

Can disrupt the tear film and reduce comfort over time

What Dry Eye Management Can Help With

Relieving burning, irritation, and dryness
Reducing redness and eye fatigue
Improving visual clarity and reducing fluctuation
Stabilising the tear film for better comfort
Preventing long-term surface damage to the eye
Reducing reliance on frequent lubricating drops

How Is Dry Eye Managed?

Dry eye is a long-term condition, but it can be effectively managed with the right approach. At the Eye Doctor Clinic, treatment is tailored to the type and severity of your dry eye following a detailed assessment.

01

Lubricating eye drops

Preservative-free artificial tears are usually the first line of treatment, providing immediate relief and protecting the ocular surface.

02

Lid hygiene and warm compresses

For evaporative dry eye caused by meibomian gland dysfunction, a structured lid hygiene routine and warm compress therapy can significantly improve tear quality.

03

Punctal plugs

Small, biocompatible devices placed into the tear drainage ducts to help the eyes retain more natural tears — particularly effective for aqueous-deficient dry eye.

04

Advanced therapies

For cases that do not respond to first-line treatment, further options may include BlephEx, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy, or anti-inflammatory treatment. Your consultant will advise on the most appropriate combination.

“Consistent management helps control symptoms and protect long-term eye health. Left untreated, dry eye can cause progressive damage to the ocular surface.”

When to See a Specialist

You should seek specialist assessment if your dry eye symptoms are persistent, if over-the-counter drops are not providing adequate relief, or if your vision is frequently blurred or fluctuating.

Early specialist assessment allows the cause of your dry eye to be identified accurately and a personalised treatment plan to be put in place before surface damage progresses.
