How does laser eye surgery work?

Precise pulses of UV light energy are directed onto the eye. The computer-guided laser sweeps across the eye to generate a new corneal shape. As well as correcting the corneal shape for near-sightedness and farsightedness, laser eye surgery can also be used to correct astigmatism.

What Is Laser Eye Surgery?

There are two types of laser surgery: LASIK and LASEK. Both of these surgeries can help you see better without glasses or contacts.

What is LASIK Surgery?

LASIK stands for “Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis.” LASIK is the more common type of laser eye surgery. In LASIK, the surgeon creates a flap on your cornea using a laser or a microkeratome (a special blade). Then, a different laser reshapes the cornea to fix your vision.

What is LASEK Surgery?

LASEK stands for “Laser-Assisted Subepithelial Keratectomy.” It’s a bit different from LASIK. In LASEK, the surgeon removes the very thin uppermost layer of your eye called the epithelium. Then, a laser reshapes your cornea underneath the flap to improve your vision.

Which One is Right for You?

The choice between LASEK and LASIK depends on your specific eye needs and what your consultant recommends. They will consider factors like your prescription and the health of your cornea.

Not everyone can have laser eye surgery. You must be old enough (usually at least 21), and your eye prescription should be stable for a while. The consultant will check to see if you’re a good candidate for your consultation.

  • Infection – This is a rare complication, however, you will be at risk of infection post-surgery.
  • Under or Overcorrection – On rare occasions, too much or too little tissue is removed from the cornea.
  • Astigmatism – This occurs when the corneal tissue is removed unevenly.
  • Loss of vision – This is incredibly rare but can still happen, this can occur when there is a severe complication during the procedure.

Each patient will need to be individually assessed to see whether they fit the criteria for any alternative treatment.

Does it hurt?

Whilst laser eye surgery is considered a painless procedure it is common to experience some discomfort

How long does the surgery take?

The procedure itself is relatively quick, we would expect you to be in the clinic for approx 90 minutes. This includes your pre-op and post op checks with the consultant.

Can you laser both eyes on the same visit?

Yes, both eyes are lasered on the same day

How long should I stop wearing my contact lenses before surgery?

Soft lenses should not be worn 7-10 days before surgery and hard lenses should not be worn 4 weeks before.

How much time do I need to take off work?

Generally, we advise 5-7 days off work, however, your consultant will be able to advise at your consultation.

How soon can I drive after surgery?

We advise 2-3 days but it is all dependent on your individual recovery, your consultant will be able to advise you further at your post-op appointment
