An in-depth look at our range of treatments

For your ease, here’s a comprehensive overview of our available treatments
A cataract is a clouding of the natural crystalline lens in your eye. As you may expect, this causes vision to become blurred and unclear. Typically, cataracts develop in later life and only become more severe over time. Cataracts can increase in severity, blurring vision to extreme levels, and sometimes causing blindness.

As cataracts tend to develop due to ageing, they are relatively common. The sensation that lights are too bright, poor vision in low light, or faded colours could all be symptoms of a cataract. Cataracts are not usually painful, unlike some other eye conditions, so identifying the symptoms is important to diagnose and treat them early.

Lens Replacement

The insertion of an artificial lens into the eye and removal of your own lens.

What is lens replacement surgery?

Lens replacement surgery can also be known as refractive lens exchange. It’s a way to improve your vision by replacing the natural lens in your eye with an artificial one. This artificial lens can help you see clearly without glasses or contact lenses. During lens replacement surgery, the surgeon removes your eye’s natural lens, which has become cloudy or ineffective. An artificial lens is then inserted, called an intraocular lens (IOL), in its place. The IOL is customised to your eye’s prescription.

Lens replacement surgery is often used to treat cataracts, a common eye condition in older adults. However, it can also be an option for people with other vision problems, like nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism.

Implantable Lens (ICL)

The ICL is intended to last indefinitely

What Is ICL?

ICL, also known as the Implantable Collamer Lens, is a type of refractive procedure that helps to correct some of the most common visual problems: nearsightedness, astigmatism, and farsightedness. ICL is a removable lens implant that is an attractive solution to LASIK and other refractive procedures.

ICL is a soft, flexible lens between the iris I (the coloured part of the eye) and your natural lens. EVO Visian ICL can be described as additive vision correction. Unlike other procedures, the EVO Visian ICL procedure does not remove the corneal tissue but works in harmony with your natural eyes to provide exceptional quality of vision. This is often the best way to reduce your dependence on glasses and contact lenses.

What Are the Benefits of EVO Visian ICL?

How the EVO Visian ICL Corrects Nearsightedness and Astigmatism

  • EVO Visian ICL functions to focus light properly back onto the retina, similarly to glasses and contact lenses. The EVO Visian ICL is placed into a space of the eye directly behind the iris (the coloured part of the eye) and in front of the natural lens. In this position, the EVO Visian ICL functions to focus light properly onto the retina, helping create clear distance vision.

* ICL lenses intended to treat farsightedness are not EVO and require two additional tiny openings in the coloured portion of your eyes to ensure proper fluid flow after the ICL is implanted.

  • Important Safety Information for EVO Visian ICL: Before considering EVO Visian ICL surgery you should have a complete eye examination and talk with your eye care professional about EVO Visian ICL surgery, especially the potential benefits, risks, and complications. You should discuss the time needed for healing after surgery.
Laser Vision Correction

Pulses of light used to reshape the cornea.

What Is Laser Eye Surgery?

Laser eye surgery is a type of surgery that helps people with glasses or contact lenses see without them.

How Does Laser Eye Surgery Work?

LASIK stands for “Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis.”. In LASIK, the surgeon creates a flap on your cornea using a laser or a microkeratome (a special blade). Then, a different laser reshapes the cornea to fix your vision.

LASEK stands for “Laser-Assisted Subepithelial Keratectomy.” It differs slightly from LASIK. In LASEK, the surgeon simply removes the very thin top layer of your eye called the epithelium. Then, a laser reshapes your cornea underneath to improve your vision. The eye retains its strength as no flap is made into the structure of the eye.

Am I the Right Candidate for Laser Eye Surgery?

Not everyone can have laser eye surgery. You must be at least 21, and your eye prescription should be stable. The consultant will check to see if you’re a good candidate for your consultation.

Cornea

The cornea is the clear transparent window at the corner of the eye.

What Is the Cornea?

The cornea is the clear front part of your eye, like a transparent window. It covers your iris and pupil, acting like a protective shield for your eye.

The cornea has two important jobs. First, it lets light into your eye. When you look at something, light enters through the cornea, helping you see. Second, it helps to focus that light. It bends the light just right to form a clear image on the retina at the back of your eye.

The cornea is like a clear, see-through layer. To stay clear, it doesn’t have blood vessels. Instead, it gets nourishment and oxygen from the fluid inside your eye and the tear fluid on its surface.

Treatments

We offer a wide range of cornea surgery treatments depending on your condition:

Laser Vision Correction
Fuchs’ Dystrophy

Individuals with Fuchs’ Dystrophy, which affects the inner layer of the cornea, might find relief through a DMEK treatment. During this procedure, the damaged cells are replaced with healthy ones.
Keratoconus

Conditions We Treat
  • Dry eyes
  • Pterygium
  • Infections
  • Recurrent Corneal Erosions

Our eye specialists are dedicated to helping you with your eye problems. There are many treatment options, and they’ll carefully consider your individual situation to recommend what’s best for you. Ultimately, the decision is yours, and our skilled staff will do their best to give you all the information you need and make you feel comfortable with your choice.

Glaucoma

A group of diseases that damages the optic nerve of the eye.

Glaucoma Diagnosis

Getting diagnosed with glaucoma involves a series of eye tests that help our specialists understand your eye health. If you have glaucoma, don’t worry, there are many treatment options to help manage it and protect your vision. Regular checkups are key to keeping your eyes healthy.

Glaucoma Treatment Options

If you’ve been diagnosed with glaucoma, be reassured that effective treatments are available to help manage your condition and preserve your vision.

Eye Drops

One common way to treat glaucoma is with prescription eye drops. These drops help lower the pressure inside your eyes, often the main goal of managing glaucoma.

Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty

Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) is a modern and effective treatment option for glaucoma. It helps lower eye pressure, preserving your vision and potentially reducing your need for glaucoma medications. Unlike some other laser procedures, SLT is “selective,” meaning it targets specific cells in the eye’s drainage system without causing harm to surrounding tissue.

Deep sclerectomy

Deep sclerectomy is a surgical option for managing glaucoma. Creating a new drainage pathway helps lower eye pressure. You’ll be given anaesthesia to ensure you’re comfortable and don’t feel any pain. The surgeon makes a tiny incision in the white part of the eye (the sclera) near the front of the eye. This incision allows access to a deeper layer called the scleral flap. The surgeon carefully removes a part of this flap and then places a special implant called a “stent” to create a drainage channel. This new channel helps excess eye fluid drain out, reducing pressure inside the eye.

This procedure is less invasive than some other options, which can mean a quicker recovery for many patients.

Trabeculectomy

Trabeculectomy is another surgical option for managing glaucoma. You’ll be given anaesthesia to ensure you’re comfortable and don’t feel any pain. The surgeon makes a small incision in the white part of the eye (the sclera). Then a small amount of tissue in the eye’s drainage system, called the trabecular meshwork, is removed. This flap allows fluid to drain out of the eye more easily. A small reservoir called a “bleb,” forms under the upper eyelid, where excess fluid collects and drains away.

Keratoconus

The cornea becomes thin and irregularly shaped.

What Is Keratoconus?

The cornea is the clear front window of your eye. It should have a nice, round shape to help focus light properly. In keratoconus, the cornea becomes thinner and starts to bulge out like a cone. This cone shape can cause vision problems and may make your vision blurry and distorted, you may see halos around lights, and it can be hard to focus on things.
Our specialists can diagnose keratoconus with a special eye exam by using a machine called a corneal topographer to create a map of your cornea’s shape.

Keratoconus Treatment Options

Keratoconus can be managed. You might need special contact lenses to make your vision clearer. In some cases, surgery may be an option to strengthen your cornea.

Crosslinking

One treatment for keratoconus is called corneal collagen cross-linking. Effectively this is like adding support beams to your cornea. During this procedure, special eye drops and ultraviolet light are used to make your cornea stronger.

Topography (Shape) Guided Laser

Shape-guided laser is a type of laser technology used in eye surgery to enhance your vision. It’s like having a personalised map of your eye’s imperfections so that the laser can correct them. This creates a 3D map of these imperfections, known as aberrations. The laser then reshapes your cornea to correct these irregularities, giving you sharper and clearer vision.

Ring Implants (Kerarings)

Kerarings, also known as intracorneal ring segments are inserted into the cornea to make it flatter or rounder, helping it focus light correctly on the retina. This procedure can reduce your dependence on glasses or contact lenses and enhance your ability to see more clearly.

Corneal Transplant

A corneal transplant, also known as a keratoplasty, is when a damaged or cloudy cornea is replaced with a healthy one from a donor. You’ll be given anaesthesia to ensure you don’t feel pain during the surgery. The surgeon removes the damaged cornea and replaces it with the donor cornea, stitching it into place.

Corneal transplants can provide clearer vision and relief from pain or discomfort caused by corneal problems. They can significantly improve the quality of life for those who have been living with impaired vision.

DMEK is a method of corneal transplantation.

What is DMEK for Fuchs’ Dystrophy?

DMEK stands for Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty. It’s a surgical technique used to treat Fuchs’ Dystrophy, a condition that affects the innermost layer of your cornea, making it cloudy, reducing vision and causing discomfort.

DMEK surgery is performed when the inner layer of the cornea (called the endothelium) is not working correctly due to Fuchs’ Dystrophy. During DMEK, this damaged layer is replaced with a healthy donor endothelium, restoring clarity to the cornea.

Whilst DMEK is a highly successful procedure, there are some risks involved, such as the possibility of rejection or complications. Your specialist will closely monitor your progress and provide medications to help prevent these issues.

Totally unexpectedly, I needed cataract surgery for both eyes, and it was advised to be conducted before my long arranged holiday, which was just 3 months away. Dr. Musa explained everything in a user-friendly manner. The recovery after each operation was quick and pain-free, and just 12 hours after the first surgery, I could see without glasses for the first time since I was 7 years old. Today, I have been discharged, and I only need glasses for threading a needle, which is quite ironic as that was the only thing I could do without glasses before!

My experience in Costa Rica was truly wonderful, and the wildlife and colors I saw through my “new eyes” were spectacular.”
