What a great experience! Very reassuring and I am very grateful for the consultation from Dr Musa he was so helpful in helping me make a decision to proceed to having eye correction surgery. I have the upmost confidence in him and the team at the Eye Doctor Clinic, Huddersfield.
Lozza 747I had implants with Dr Musa ten years ago. It was the best thing I've ever done. They are brilliant. My sight both near and distant was very poor but since the op I've had no glasses no lenses and my sight has been super. It remains really good to this day. Thank you Dr Musa. Brilliant consultations and treatment for glaucoma since.
Kay FitbitI can highly recommend the Eye Doctor Clinic, and I am so pleased I went there. Dr Musa, Gemma and Jess are lovely. They are very knowledgeable and were able to answer all my questions. My vision following surgery is great, and not having to wear glasses is fantastic.
Carol PeelWhat is Refractive Lens Exchange?
The RLE procedure is closely related to modern cataract surgery, but it's performed before the natural lens becomes cloudy. After numbing drops are applied, a microscopic incision is made at the edge of the cornea.
Ultrasound or laser technology gently removes the clear natural lens, and a custom-selected intraocular lens (IOL) is inserted into the lens capsule. The chosen IOL power corrects pre-existing refractive errors such as myopia (short-sight), hyperopia (long-sight), or presbyopia (age-related reading difficulty).
Premium lens types — multifocal, trifocal, or EDOF (Extended Depth of Focus) — provide continuous vision at near, intermediate, and distance ranges.

Who Is RLE For?
Refractive Lens Exchange may be the right choice if any of the following apply to you:
RLE may not be suitable if you have significant corneal disease, macular degeneration, glaucoma, or other retinal conditions. A comprehensive consultation determines candidacy.
Benefits of Refractive Lens Exchange
Permanent Vision Correction — eliminates or greatly reduces the need for glasses or contact lenses
Freedom from Presbyopia — restores reading and intermediate vision lost with age
Precision and Stability — IOL power remains constant for life, no regression as with laser surgery
Prevention of Future Cataract — as the natural lens is replaced, cataract can never form
Predictable Outcomes — guided by advanced biometry and laser-assisted precision
How Does Refractive Lens Exchange Work?
RLE is a day procedure, usually lasting 15–20 minutes per eye. Local anaesthetic drops ensure comfort throughout. Vision may appear slightly hazy for the first day as the eye adapts to the new lens, but most people return to light activities within 24–48 hours.
The second eye is typically treated within a week. A tailored programme of follow-up visits ensures healing and optimal visual balance between both eyes.

Frequently Asked Questions
RLE is ideal for patients over 40 who are not suitable for laser surgery, or those who want to eliminate both their refractive error and future cataract risk in one procedure. Suitability is confirmed through a clinical consultation.
The surgical technique is essentially the same. The key difference is that in RLE your natural lens is clear, whereas in cataract surgery it is clouded. RLE is chosen proactively for vision correction before a cataract develops.
Yes. RLE uses the same highly refined technique as cataract surgery, one of the most commonly performed and safest operations in the world. With a complication rate below 0.5%, our fellowship-trained team ensures your absolute peace of mind.
With a premium multifocal or EDOF lens, most patients achieve excellent vision at all distances and rarely need glasses. With a monofocal lens, you will typically still need reading glasses. Your consultant will recommend the best option for your lifestyle.
Pricing depends on the lens selected. Our team will provide a transparent, fixed quote during your consultation, with all follow-up care included in the price.
