What a great experience! Very reassuring and I am very grateful for the consultation from Dr Musa he was so helpful in helping me make a decision to proceed to having eye correction surgery. I have the upmost confidence in him and the team at the Eye Doctor Clinic, Huddersfield.

I had implants with Dr Musa ten years ago. It was the best thing I've ever done. They are brilliant. My sight both near and distant was very poor but since the op I've had no glasses no lenses and my sight has been super. It remains really good to this day. Thank you Dr Musa. Brilliant consultations and treatment for glaucoma since.

I can highly recommend the Eye Doctor Clinic, and I am so pleased I went there. Dr Musa, Gemma and Jess are lovely. They are very knowledgeable and were able to answer all my questions. My vision following surgery is great, and not having to wear glasses is fantastic.

What Is Long-Sightedness (Hyperopia)?

In a hyperopic eye, light tends to be focused behind the retina rather than directly on it. To compensate, the natural focusing mechanism of the eye works harder to bring images into focus. Young eyes can often manage this effort, but over time the additional strain leads to fatigue and discomfort.

As the eye's natural focusing ability decreases with age, the underlying long-sightedness becomes more obvious and near tasks become more challenging even with effort.

Long-Sightedness (Hyperopia) is generally related to the eye being slightly shorter than average or the corneal curvature being flatter than normal. These anatomical tendencies are often inherited and can run in families.

Unlike myopia, which typically causes blurred distance vision, long-sightedness primarily affects near vision, particularly for reading, close work, and screen use. In higher degrees, distance vision can also become blurred, particularly later in the day when the eyes are fatigued.

Children with significant uncorrected long-sightedness may be at risk of developing a squint (strabismus) or a lazy eye (amblyopia) if the condition is not identified and managed early.

Very commonlong-sightedness affects a significant proportion of the population, particularly over the age of 40

Children at riskuncorrected significant long-sightedness in childhood can lead to squint or amblyopia if untreated

Recognising the Signs

The most common symptoms of long-sightedness relate to near vision strain and eye fatigue. Here is what to look out for.

Blurred or uncomfortable vision when reading or doing close work
Tired or aching eyes after near tasks such as reading or screen use
Headaches centred around the forehead or behind the eyes after prolonged near work
Difficulty maintaining focus and needing frequent breaks from close tasks
Distance vision also becoming blurred in higher degrees of long-sightedness, particularly when tired
Children struggling at school, sitting unusually close to work, or developing a squint

What Causes Long-Sightedness (Hyperopia)?

Long-Sightedness (Hyperopia) is usually due to the shape and length of the eye. These characteristics are commonly inherited.

Short eye length

The eye is slightly shorter than average, causing light to focus behind the retina

Flat corneal curvature

A flatter than average cornea does not bend light strongly enough to focus on the retina

Genetics

Long-Sightedness (Hyperopia) often runs in families and is frequently present from birth

Age

As the eye’s natural focusing ability (accommodation) declines with age, underlying long-sightedness becomes more apparent

Childhood risk

Significant undetected long-sightedness in children can cause amblyopia (lazy eye) or strabismus (squint) if not managed early

How Long-Sightedness (Hyperopia) Is Diagnosed

Long-Sightedness (Hyperopia) is diagnosed with refraction, sometimes using pupil-dilating drops to relax the focusing muscles and reveal the full prescription, particularly important in younger patients whose eyes can compensate. Visual acuity at both distance and near is measured, and eye alignment is assessed, particularly in children.

01

Refraction

Lenses are used to measure the exact degree of long-sightedness. In children or young adults, cycloplegic drops may be used to relax the focusing system and reveal the true prescription.

02

Visual acuity testing

Vision is measured at both distance and near to assess the full impact of the long-sightedness on daily visual function.

03

Eye alignment assessment

Eye alignment is checked, particularly in children, to identify any associated squint caused by the extra focusing effort long-sightedness requires.

04

Ocular health check

The overall health of the eye is assessed to ensure there are no additional causes for symptoms beyond the refractive error.

When to See a Specialist

You should consider specialist assessment if near work causes frequent headaches or eye strain, if vision remains blurred despite recent glasses, or if you are exploring options for surgical correction such as laser eye surgery.

Children with suspected squint, difficulty at school, unexplained headaches, or uneven vision between the eyes should be reviewed by an eye specialist promptly, early treatment of amblyopia is most effective in younger children.

“Do not wait for symptoms to worsen. Early assessment in children is particularly important, as uncorrected long-sightedness can affect visual development and lead to conditions that become harder to treat with age.”
